Independence is home to the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman. He was one of the most beloved presidents that the U.S. has ever had. After serving as president, he returned home to Independence. There are many historical buildings in honor of him, and learning about the history of his life and these buildings is fascinating. As he put it, “There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know.”

Historic Independence Square

Historic Independence Square is in the very center of the Independence Square right by the Truman Courthouse. Over the years, it has been revitalized into a popular district filled shopping, restaurants, and numerous entertainment options. Many people love visiting to see where Harry S. Truman lived most of his life. Their are tours on horse drawn carriages that make learning about the history that much more fun! Not only is the Square keeping the history alive, but the revitalization has helped many local businesses flourish.
